Semporna: Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) first Commander, DCP Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun asked for time to successfully tackle the problem of security breaches by militants from southern Philippines that saw four kidnappings in the past six months.

"Today is my first day as Esscom Commander and I ask for time and the opportunity to prove myself.

I accept the responsibility entrusted to me," he said, adding he hoped to gain the support and cooperation of all parties in discharging his duties.

Abdul Rashid was appointed Esscom Commander by the Prime Minister on July 8 in line with the restructuring. He will lead all aspects of security, operations and defence.

He said the Esscom Operation Room in Lahad Datu is functioning 24 hours and always waiting for information, complaints or public enquiry.

He advised the public to quickly inform or report any information at 089-863181 or contact the nearest police station.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rashid Harun, denied that a shooting incident occurred at Danawan island on Monday night.

He advised members of the public who received such information to check its accuracy first with the Esscom Operations Room or with police.

He said the dissemination of unfounded speculation could cause those spreading them to also face action.

"Do not simply believe uncertain information before getting confirmation from the relevant authority," he said.

Rumours of the alleged incident was spread through WhatsApp.

Danawan island is located about 30 minutes by boat from Mabul island, the location of the ambush by eight gunmen last Saturday which claimed the life of late Corporal Ab Rajah Jamuan and Constable Zakia Aleip being taken hostage.
