Tawau: A 38-year-old woman who allegedly insulted the Muslim community on her Facebook page was remanded for 24 hours on Monday.District Police Chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah said the insurance agent was picked up by a police team headed by ASP Jafri Othman at her house in Jalan Bunga Raya at about 11.30am.

He said team also confiscated a white P-Link wifi router, its charger and an Apple iPhone 5 with its SIM card to assist in their investigations for the case, which was opened under Section 4 (1) © of the Sedition Act.

"She is being remanded for 24 hours under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code," he said, adding that police might increase the duration of the remand depending on the initial investigations.

The woman was detained after three individuals submitted police reports against her claiming that she posted racist posts, insulting the Muslim community on her Facebook page.

However, she made a report to deny having posted such things and claimed that the Facebook account with her name was hacked by irresponsible individuals.

She also claimed that she had previously lodged a report to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as well as the police regarding the hacking of her Facebook account in 2013 but no action was taken until she found out about the racist posts through her friend on July 18.
