Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's up and coming karate exponent Cairola Cheverry Wong returned home with a silver medal for the national team at the just concluded 4th Thailand Open held last weekend, which saw a total of 300 athletes from 15 countries taking part in the four-day event.Sabah Karate Association (SCA) Secretary General Julian Chin said on Thursday that Cairola had to settle for second place after losing to a Thai exponent in the final and she had earlier defeated another Thai in the semifinal.

"She did very well considering that the standard of the competition was very high with the participation of elite athletes from Iran, Thailand, Vietnam, Estonia and France.

"I am very happy that her impressive performance has also caught the eyes of the national selectors again as she will be representing the country in the upcoming Asia or AKF Karate Competition to be held in Kuala Lumpur next month.

It is one of the biggest event in Asia after the Asian Games where all the top Asian athletes will compete," he added.

He also said the competition in Thailand was a good lesson for Cairola and another Sabahan Su Men Wei who also took part in the boys individual event but lost in the first round.

The two from Sabah were earlier selected by the national body based on merits as Cairola has won gold in the National Junior Championship held in Seremban earlier this year while Meng Wei was a bronze medalist in the Malaysian Milo Open Karate Championship held in Kuala Lumpur last month.
