429 homeless in Kudat fire

Kudat: A total of 429 squatters were made homeless after 67 houses were destroyed in a blaze at Kg Tanjung Kapur, here, Tuesday.Tanjung Kapor Assemblyman Datuk Teo Chee Kang said some of the squatters who lost their homes in the 12.30pm blaze are locals while others, IMM13 holders.

"My Community Development Office (PPM) for Tanjung Kapor is liaising with the Welfare Department here to register all the fire victims and screening them.

"Those victims who have immediate families and relatives will stay with them while the rest are being relocated to three community halls in Kg Tanjung Kapur, Kg Pantai Bahagia and Kg Air," he said to Daily Express.

Teo, who is also Minister of Special Tasks, said his PPM unit is also working together with the Welfare Department to prepare cooked food and other basic necessities to help the fire victims at the three relief halls.

"I will be visiting the fire victims today (Wednesday) and attending a meeting with the Kudat District Officer, who is also the Chairman of the Natural Disaster Committee here, to discuss how to assist the fire victims, including on housing aspects," he said.

A total of16 firefighters from Kudat and Kota Marudu in two fire engines were rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 12.45pm.

They managed to control the fire from spreading at 3.02pm and the operation ended at 6.31pm.

No casualties were reported in the incident and the cause of the fire and losses are still under investigation.
