The 10 Samas athletes were among a total of 27 Malaysian athletes competing in the championship, which also saw the participation of Brunei, Singapore, Sri Lanka, USA and Indonesia, with a total of 585 athletes.
The top medal scorer was Sylvester Chang who competed in the 70-74 age group, bringing home gold medals for javelin, discuss and shot putt as well as a silver medal for triple jump. Meanwhile, Tarmizi Sandhu (60-64 age group) also took home three gold medals for javelin, discuss and shot putt. Fung Kong (60-64) took home two silver medals for the 100m and 200m events, while Pilah @ Ondog Kisang took home a bronze medal in discuss for the 60-64 years age group.
The women took home the majority of the medals, where Christina Labanjing (60-64) took home gold medals for the 100m, 200m and 400m events and a bronze medal for the 4x100m event.
Laura Dosui (35-39) took home gold medals for 100m and long jump as well as a bronze in the 4x100m event while Kimeh Monjitol (60-64) took home two gold medals for the 1,500m and 3,000m long distance events.
Joanne Foo (50-54) won a gold medal for the 800m event and two silvers for 400m and 1,500m events, Cyril Jusin (35-39) won a gold medal for triple jump and Sayongon Ahkew (60-64) won a silver medal in the 1,500m event.
