Curfew is extended till Sept 2

Lahad Datu: The curfew order in the waters off six districts in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) has been extended until Sept 2 but for two hours less each day.State Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman (pic) said the third phase of the curfew in the areas involved will be implemented for 10 hours, beginning at 7pm until 5am.Jalaluddin said the decision to extend the curfew was made after discussion with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Commander DCP Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun.ADVERTISEMENT "After taking into account the security situation in the areas involved as well as on various aspects, with the power vested in me under Section 31(1) of the Police Act, I have decided to extend the curfew."A letter has been submitted to the Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and he has agreed to extend the curfew, starting on Aug 20 until Sept 2," he said in a press conference at the district police headquarters, here, Tuesday.According to Jalaluddin, a total of 14 fishermen were charged in court with violating the 6pm to 6am curfew during phase two of the order that ran from Aug 3 until last Monday.Therefore, he urged the public, especially fishermen and those living near the curfew areas, to give cooperation and comply with the curfew to avoid being charged in court.ADVERTISEMENT In the meantime, Jalaluddin said the curfew implemented following the attack in Pulau Mabul in July is not affecting any party, including the fishermen."We have met and held dialogue sessions with the fishermen and they are satisfied and willing to give cooperation.

"There is no problem as we have also issued permits for the fishermen to go fishing," he said, adding that he had also checked the situation in the fish market and the price remained as usual.Meanwhile, Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Abdul Rashid told reporters that they were thankful for the cooperation given by the public during the curfew.He said the curfew helped the security forces to implement enforcement and identify any boats or intruders that tried to enter the waters.Therefore, he hoped the public will continue to provide cooperation to the security forces and comply with the curfew for the safety of all parties.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The first phase of curfew was declared by Jalaluddin on July 19 following the attack at Pulau Mabul, Semporna on July 12. The curfew was then extended until last Monday.The curfew involves six districts in the Esszone, namely Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Tawau and Semporna.
