Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Under-19 squad's chances of making the knock-out stage of the FAM Youth Cup tournament looked dead and gone after another humiliating 5-0 defeat by Kedah in their group C clash on Friday morning. The team who lost 1-4 to Sarawak a day earlier was again fully exposed by the marauding Kedah juniors who had thrashed Sarawak 7-1 in their opening match.

Sabah could have taken the lead in the early stage when they were awarded a penalty in the 4th minute but Kedah's keeper was able to read the spot kick from Rahmanshah.

The miss proved costly and within three minutes, Kedah players broke away from the right and scored their opening goal. They then netted their second when Sabah's defence failed to clear the danger from a corner kick in the 14th minute.

The third came in the 59th minute from a free kick followed by an individual goal from one of the Kedah players in the 74th minute and the fifth was conceded from another set piece deep into injury time.

Head coach Rozlee Idris, who was full of confident before the start of the tournament, acknowledged that Kedah players were way ahead technically.

"We are very sorry for the result. The players tried hard but their counterparts were just so much better individually and technically and they were also very good in the dead ball situation.

With the loss, the only hope of making the quarterfinals for Sabah is to win big against Kuala Lumpur in their final group match on Sunday (Aug 24) and at the same time hope that host Melaka will do them a favour by winning big against Sarawak.

Kedah are currently top of the table with six points from two matches followed by Sarawak, also with six points, but having played a match more while Sabah are in third with three points followed by Melaka and Kuala Lumpur with one point each from two matches.

For Sabah to overtake Sarawak for the number two spot, they will need to win by at least a 10-goal margin against Kuala Lumpur and a defeat of the Sarawak team in their match against Melaka.
