Kota Kinabalu: Security forces of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) are on the hunt for three men in a speedboat who fled after running into a marine police vessel in the waters between Tanjung Sirongol and Pulau Maiga, Semporna, early Friday. Esscom Commander Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said the marine police were looking for the men around Pulau Gaya and were extending the search to Pulau Bohey Dulang.

He did not elaborate.

It is learnt that the suspects ran into the marine police boat at 5.45am and sped off in the direction of Pulau Gaya even as the security forces opened fire on them.

"The police ordered them to stop but they refused prompting the enforcement team to fire a warning shot before chasing after their boat," a source said.

The source also claimed that the suspects ignored the warning shot and escaped by entering the shallow waters, which made it difficult for the enforcement boat to reach.

They are believed to be hiding at the nearby waters or small islands to evade detection.

A random survey at Pekan Semporna about 3.30pm on Friday, showed daily activity going on as usual and that there was no unusual movement of enforcement logistics.

Some of the residents when approached by the media, declined to comment on the latest incident on the grounds that they were not sure what really took place but they hoped Semporna is safe from danger.

District Police Chief Supt Mazlan Lazim could not be reached for more details at press time.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman however is scheduled to hold a press conference at the Semporna Marine Base, on Saturday.
