Kota Kinabalu: An 18-year-old Ah Long (illegal moneylender) from Johor who constantly pressured his customer into paying up was nabbed after a contractor lodged a report on Aug. 19. State Commercial Crime Department Chief Supt Saiman Kasran said the contractor claimed that the Ah Long constantly demanded for payment even though he had already settled a huge sum of what he had borrowed. "The constant pestering prompted the man to lodge a report for fear of his family's safety," he said. A police team managed to nab the man here and confiscated a vehicle as well as several documents believed used in the illegal activity. He advised those who wished to borrow money to do so through registered financial institutions instead of going to Ah Longs. ADVERTISEMENT On another note, Saiman said, cases involving Lucky Draw contest scams via Short Messaging System (SMS) are still rampant in the State despite the numerous warnings and advice issued by police as well as financial institutions."The modus operandi is to send a SMS to random phone users telling them that they have won attractive prizes and the so-called lucky winners are asked to contact a certain number or log into a certain website to claim their prizes. "However, once they call, they are asked to deposit a certain amount of cash into an account in order to process the release of their prizes, sometimes, the unknowing victims are asked to deposit cash into a reload coupon. "They only know that they have been cheated when they find out that the contact number is no longer active, prompting them to lodge a police report," he said.
