Kota Kinabalu: The explanation by Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming on the logging activities at the proposed geothermal power plant project at Andrassy Forest Reserve, Tawau has brought about more confusion than clarification, said DAP Sabah.Vice Chairman, Chan Foong Hin said the latest figure of the cleared area size as mentioned by Pang was totally inconsistent with the previous statements made by the power plant developer, Tawau Green Energy and the State Forestry Department.Based on the documents that can be publicly accessed namely, the Project Design Document of Clean Development Mechanism for the Tawau geothermal power project dated Sept 2, 2012 had stated that during the stakeholders meeting conducted on July 20, 2011, the project director Andrew Amalados had said in his reply to Sylvester Taing that "area leased to this project is only two to three acres for the power house itself.

A further 30 acres is being leased to cover the geothermal wells and associated piping." Meanwhile, State Forestry Director Datuk Sam Mannan in September 2013 had mentioned, not only once but twice, that the estimated area to be cleared would be about 150 hectares and "the only significant source is the Parks development from some 150 hectares (approx.) of expected clearing, if necessary at all."Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"But now, Pang said there were a total of 400 hectares of which 370 hectares belonged to Sabah Parks and 30 hectares to the Forestry Department, with about 56,000 cubic meters of logs.""What is actually the size of area to be cleared?" he asked.
