Labuan: The Fire and Rescue Department saved properties worth RM34,901,950 from fires here during the first eight months this year, while losses were recorded at RM589,550. Labuan Fire Chief Jainal @Zainal Madasin said the amount of losses was small compared to previous years because there were no major fire outbreaks.

"We hope to see this trend continue as the people of Labuan become more aware of the importance of fire safety," he said at the department's meet-the-clients day in conjunction with the Raya celebration at its headquarters, as a tribute to the firemen and officers.

"Their sacrifices and dedication to duty could not be repaid. As such, the function is to express appreciation to them who were either on standby or on duty during the festive month," he said.

"When other people returned to their hometowns to celebrate, our officers and men had to be ready to answer any distress call," he added.

Meanwhile, guest-of-honour Senator Datuk Yunus Kurus thanked the brigade for their high performance and putting duty above self.

Among those present were Labuan Liberty Port CEO Dato' Seri Alias Haji Abdul Rahman and Deputy OCPD Douglas Nyeging Taong.
