Two Filipinos are held over fish bombing

Semporna: Two Filipinos aged 35 and 30 were detained by marine police off the waters of Nusa Kaya near here, at about 5.31pm on Sunday on suspicion of making and owning explosives for fish bombing activities. Sabah Region 4 Commander ACP Mohammad Madun said the detention was made by a team of marine personnel conducting Ungerin Special Duties and Ops Paradise in the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone). "The team chased after the suspicious pump boat and managed to overtake the boat leading to the arrest of the two men and confiscated the boat, engine, compressor, glass bottle filled with ammonia fertiliser, six kilogrammes of fish, diving mask, fins and two gallons of petrol all worth about RM2,559.45.

He said the team also seized 20 jerry cans of petrol believed to be smuggled out of the country at about 5.30pm the same day. "A 22-year-old Malaysian skipper was brought in for further investigation," he said, adding that the boat, engine and 500 liters of petrol all worth about RM12,845 were seized. He said a total of 80 jerry cans filled with petrol believed to be smuggled out of the country was also confiscated at Kg. Labuan Haji at about 9.48pm. "Prior to that, the team raided a premises at the coastal area of the village when they came across an activity where jerry cans filled with petrol, believed to be kept in the premises, was being transferred from a speed boat.

"Also detained was a 19-year-old man, also a Malaysian citizen who was transferring the jerry cans," he said, adding that the boat, engine, 2,000 liters of petrol all worth RM18,380 were also seized.
