13 detained in Semporna

Semporna: Marine police here detained 13 Filipinos, including four women aged between 15 and 40, who tried to sneak into the country via Sibangkat Island and Kg Labuan Haji, off Semporna waters, on Monday.Sabah Marine Police Commander ACP Mohammad Madun said the first check was conducted by a team of eight marine police personnel at Sibangkit at about 3.10pm and six men and two women who were travelling in a speed boat were detained.

"All were arrested after they failed to produce valid identification documents," he said, adding that the speed boat and its 40hp engine, worth RM18,000 was also seized.

In another incident, three men and two women who just arrived from Sitangkai were detained at Kg Labuan Haji after police stopped and checked the pump boat they were in.

"All had no valid documents including the boat skipper.

The pump boat and its two engines worth RM3,600 were also seized," said Mohammad.

The cases will be investigated under Immigration Act 1959/63.

Meanwhile, in SANDAKAN, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) thwarted an attempt by 14 illegals to sneak into Sandakan in a speed boat and a pump boat off Pulau Nunuyan Laut on Monday.

Director of Operasi DM17 Lieutenant Commander Maritime Mohamed Yusoff Mohamed Ali said both boats were detected while patrolling the area.

"Checks on both boats found there were 14 Filipino nationals including a child, aged between 7 and 35, without any valid identification documents," he said.

He added that all suspects were held and the case will be investigated under Immigration Act 1959/63.
