Ipoh: Perak is poised to become the solar panel production hub in Southeast Asia following the cooperation between Majuperak Energy Resources Sdn Bhd and Baltic Optical Disks (BOD) Group of Companies of Lithuania.Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the state government had in principle agreed to make Perak as the gateway to Southeast Asia through this solar panel technology.

"This is in view that we see companies that are involved in solar panel research create the latest technology very quickly.

"Hence, today we have this agreement with the hope that this company (BOD) will set up a plant or its production facility in Perak," he said.

He said this after witnessing the signing of agreements between Majuperak Energy Resources director, Salween Azila Ahmad Tauffik and BOD Group chief executive officer, Vidmantas Janulevicius.

Zambry said the use of solar panel technology was in line with the state's environmentally friendly policy.

"We have been discussing about this...in fact solar is one of our policy initiatives to be introduced, in addition to hydro electricity.

"We hope from now on, we will welcome solar panel which is quite environmentally friendly. But at the same time you really need a proper technology, proper measurement of temperature, otherwise it won't work," he added.

Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) chief executive, Datuk Aminuddin Md Desa said Majuperak Energy Resources, a company under PKNP, had signed a landmark agreement to launch a pilot project near Ipoh to showcase the new generation glass-glass solar modules.

"The pilot project is the first step towards the development of a 100-Megawatt glass-glass solar module factory in Perak. The panel created by the partner can be used in buildings and it gives more energy from solar.

"The next generation solar modules offered by BOD fit well with our aim to position Perak as a centre for technology and renewable energy," Aminuddin said.

Meanwhile, Janulevicius said the state of Perak is ideally located to become a leader in the manufacturing of next generation glass-glass solar cells and modules for the Asean region.

"BOD's technology is ideally suited for photovoltaic solutions in buildings. In contrast to standard modules, the degradation process of glass-glass is significantly slower.

"The solutions can therefore be used as building material as well as generate solar energy," he said. –Bernama
