Drugs: Couple and son among nine held in LD

Lahad Datu: LAHAD DATU: A married couple and their son were among nine people nabbed by the district police for possessing drugs in three separate raids here and in Felda Sahabat areas. District Police Chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad, in a press conference on Wednesday, said an estimated 104.5gm of drugs, believed to be Syabu worth about RM24,330, were seized from them.

The raids were conducted by a team from the Lahad Datu Narcotics Police Unit, led by Inspector Mohd Noor Ariffin, following tip-offs. "On September 6, the team raided an unnumbered house in Kampung Pangkalan Sahabat 16, Felda Sahabat and nabbed a 28-year-old man who was standing near the chicken coop and holding a black plastic bag.

"An inspection found an aluminium cigarette box with 71 small packets and four medium packets containing a substance believed to be Syabu," he said, adding that the seizure weighing 11.10gm was estimated to be worth about RM2,560.

Hamzah said the case would be investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The second raid was conducted at San Soon Plantation in Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan on September 11.

During the raid, the team nabbed a married couple and their son following the discovery of 30.1gm of drugs on one of them. Hamzah said the seizure was estimated to be worth about RM7,000 and the case would be investigated under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

Meanwhile, five men were picked up when the team raided an unnumbered house at Kampung Perpaduan Bakapit, Jalan Tungku on September 16.

The team found four plastic packets containing 63.3gm of a substance, believed to be Syabu. According to Hamzah, the seizure was estimated to be worth RM14,770 and all suspects, aged between 15 and 28, were now remanded for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act. Hamzah, during the press conference, also urged members of the public to help the police by channelling information so that immediate action could be taken to curb drug-related activities.
