Kota Kinabalu: Spectators of illegal motorcycle and car racing have been warned that they could be booked under the Road Transport Act 1987.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said those found watching and cheering as well as giving support to the illegal racers could be hauled up and brought to the police station for further investigation.

He said the spectators could also be charged under Road Transport Act 1987.

"Do not look for trouble as police can also detain spectators without a warrant and bring them back to the police station to undergo urine tests and documentation.

"Those found participating betting during the races could be fined up to RM2,000 or six months in jail or both, upon conviction under Section 81(3) of the same Act.

"As for the illegal racers and those found organising and sponsoring the illegal racing, they could be charged under Section 81(2) of the same Act that carries the same punishment," he said, Wednesday.

Chandra said they conducted three operations last week where a total of 174 spectators were hauled up and brought to the police station here.

"My best advice to the public, especially youths, is not to look for trouble by watching or betting in illegal racing here. Stay away from such unhealthy activities which is also against the law," he said.

Meanwhile, Chandra said police seized 7,780 pieces of VCDs without 'B' certificates under 'Ops Ostrich', from August to Sept 16 in 15 operations during which 11 operations raided business premises and four operations were mounted against street peddlers selling such VCDs.

He said they also arrested 12 men and two women aged between 16 and 25 and that two have been charged in court.
