Kota Kinabalu: A masked man struck at another bank early Wednesday but, as in the first attempt the previous day, left the building without laying his hands on even a sen. In the latest incident, the thief had to make a quick getaway after failing to prise open a Cash Deposit Machine (CDM) belonging to the Hong Leong Bank at its premises in Alamesra along Jalan Sulaman.

The botched attempt comes barely a day after a thief, also wearing a mask, failed to break into an automated teller machine (ATM) of AmBank Berhad at Damai Plaza at 4.20am Tuesday.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra, said closed circuit television (CCTV) footage belonging to Hong Leong Bank showed a man entering the area in which the CDM and ATM machines were located at 4.40am.

"The man covered his face with a piece of cloth or shirt when he was inside the premises. Subsequently, he used a metal iron like a crowbar to force open the CDM metal vault.

However, he failed to break the security code of the metal second layer containing cash," he said, adding the thief thereafter immediately left the scene with nothing to show.

He said the bank's service manager alerted the police upon seeing the CDM vault door left open at 8.40am.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 380/511 of the Penal Code for attempting to steal inside a building.

On whether the first and second incidents were committed by the same suspect, Chandra said police investigations were underway and that police were hunting for the suspect.

He urged those with information to come forward to assist the police in investigations. It was earlier reported that a man wearing a cartoon hero mask had entered the AmBank Berhad ATM room in Damai Plaza at 4.19am, sprayed four CCTV cameras with white paint before attempting to pry open one of the machines.

The suspect only managed to force open the first layer of the ATM vault machine that contained cash but failed to break into the second metal layer that has a security code.

He left the premises empty handed.
