PENAMPANG: The Native Court here will be the first to have a Kadazan translation of their own customary laws as per the Native Courts Enactments 1992/1995.Penampang UPKO Chief, Datuk Donald Mojuntin announced this in a brief ceremony Thursday where mock cheques totalling RM15,000 were handed over to the CEO of Kadazan Language Foundation, Rita Lasimbang who will handle the translation project.

In his brief speech, Mojuntin credited the translation idea to OKK Bryan Matasing, the new District Chief of Penampang where the documents will help upgrade the status of the Native Courts to the level of Syariah and Subordinate Courts. To achieve this goal, we must not rely on a few individuals or government allocations alone but the Kadazan community must also give their support, he added.

He then announced that RM10,000 of the cost of the translation project is sponsored by Datuk Albert Boyou, Managing Director of Montis Sdn Bhd as one of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility. The balance of RM5000 was added by his own party UPKO. The Donations were channelled through the Native Court of Penampang.

This project is part of the on-going efforts that were initiated by Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and the Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Richard Malanjum where the Federal Government had allocated 60 million to build 6 Native Court buildings and a training centre.

When asked to comment that the young generation of KDM today seemed to have forgotten their language, Mojuntin said the translation project would also be the proverbial two birds with one stone.

The Kadazan version of the Enactments will encourage the future generation to appreciate their own language and customary laws. At the same time he hoped that the other districts will be inspired to translate to their own local native dialects.

Earlier, Matasing announced that a thousand copies of the translation will be produced, however before printing and distribution, a draft copy will be sent to the Chief Justice for his vetting and approval.

Also present in the event was District Officer William Sampil and all the local community leaders.
