21 foreign teams competing in Borneo Cup

KOTA KINABALU: A record number of 21 foreign teams will be taking part in the 2014 Borneo Football Cup starting today (Sunday) at the Likas Stadium with the opening match between St George FA from Australia and Thailand Academies A in the Under-16 category at 9am.Organiser Scott Ollenrenshaw said the overwhelming response from overseas teams is a boost for the tourism sector especially here in Kota Kinabalu.

"Most of the foreign teams consist of clubs, schools and academies with four from Australia, nine from Indonesia, three from Thailand, two from Philippines and one each from Hong Kong, China, India."

"We also have six teams from the Peninsula while the local challenge will come from Tabs, Jubilo, Sabah FC, DPM Sports School, SK Likas and Sabah CIMB-YFA Papar," he said.

He added that the Borneo Football Cup is a youth development tournament aimed at providing both a quality tournament and great experience for junior players.

"The players will learn a great deal in tournament such as this which will expose their strength and weaknesses thus allowing them to work harder to improve their game in the future."

The 14-day tournament which is sanctioned by the Sabah Football Association and FAM will have four categories namely Under-16, Under-15, Under-14 and Under-13.

The final of the Under-16 category will be held on September 23 at UMS stadium followed by the Under-15 also at the UMS stadium on September 27, Under-14 at the Penampang stadium (September 30) and the Under-13 at the Likas Stadium (Oct 4).
