Kota Kinabalu: One of Sabah's prominent literature writers, Datuk Noraini Datuk Seri Panglima Salleh, who used to contribute her literary works to the Daily Express, was honoured with the Kencana Srikandi Award at the Sabah Women Writers Symposium.Noraini, 69, who started writing short stories, poems and literature articles since the 1960s, had her works acknowledged by the State Government after she was chosen as recipient of the Writer Appreciation 1990 award by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sabah Branch.

She also received the Sabah Islamic Poets Award in 1999 and Cultural Award and Maulidur Rasul Award in 2012. Noraini was among three recipients awarded at the event held at Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka here, Saturday, in conjunction with the State-level Women's Day celebration.

Azizah Itam, 65, received the Media Srikandi Award, while Azmah Nordin, 56, was awarded the Creative Srikandi Award.

Earlier, Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad, in her closing speech at the symposium, said writers can play an important role in creating a culture of knowledge among Malaysians, through the creation and distribution of academic materials to society.

"Knowledge and information dissemination to the public should be made the main agenda. Mastering these knowledge is what determines the survival of a nation," said Jainab. Her speech was delivered by Ministry Permanent Secretary, Datuk Siti Sapoo Ahok.

"Creative writing privileges should be maintained, preserved and conserved. If these efforts were not done, the literary world may slip into oblivion if the new generation does not know and practise it.

"Today's event should be supported and continued in an effort to preserve creative art and to spark a love of heritage which are priceless treasures," said Jainab.

She hoped such events will be a platform to trigger awareness among Malaysians not to undermine the nation's literature.

"I hope the enthusiasm and passion of the participants in the world of creative writing will continue to be lively all the time and will produce something which will make Sabah proud, Jainab added.

Meanwhile, State Attorney-General Datuk Mariati Robert, who is Chairwoman of the Sabah Women Advisory Council, said efforts should be implemented so that the world of literature could still capture the hearts of Malaysians.

"Today, the world of literature seems to be neglected since people are more focusing on racing toward development.

"Studies show how literature has begun not finding its place among the younger generation. Anxiety comes into existence when there are schools that no longer offer literary subjects to be taught in schools," said Mariati.

Also present at the event were Deputy State Secretary Asnimar Sukardi, Director of the Department of Women's Affairs Sabah-cum-Symposium Co-Chairperson Fatimah Jafar and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Director Asmiah Ajamain, who was also the co-chairperson of the symposium.
