UPSR leak: NUTP won't defend guilty members

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) will not defend members found guilty of involvement in the primary school public examination (UPSR) 2014 leak.Its President Hashim Adnan said the union viewed the issue seriously as it concerned the integrity of teachers tasked with preparing the public examination questions, and could tarnish the image of the teaching profession.

"Teachers involved in public examinations and examination invigilators have signed a letter of secrecy under the Official Secrets Act, and they should honour that oath," he told a media conference at NUTP's headquarters, here.

He said the NUTP was leaving it to the police to act against the culprits.

As a result of the incident, more than 470,000 primary six pupils have to re-sit the Science and English papers on Sept 30. Hashim hoped the public would not have a negative perception of the country's teachers numbering more than 400,000, as the culprits comprised only a small group.

He also hoped the incident would not be made a justification for any party to call for the UPSR to be abolished or replaced with an alternative.

"NUTP sees the UPSR as still necessary to assess and prepare primary six pupils for the secondary level," he said.

Hashim opined that the UPSR only needed certain improvements to avoid a similar episode.

The Government's immediate reaction to set up the Independent Committee to Review the Management of Public Examinations was apt, he said.

The committee announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Sept 11 will focus on scrutinising and assessing the work process and standard operating procedure in public examinations.

Meanwhile, Hashim thanked the ministry for appointing NUTP Secretary-General Lok Yim Pheng as a member of the committee led by former Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Zaki Tun Azmi.

"NUTP is also willing to be appointed as a consultant to the Education Ministry in relevant matters, for free," he said.

Hashim added that the NUTP could assist the ministry to enhance the national education system, as some of its members have more than 35 years' experience in the field. – Bernama
