INCHEON: National track cyclist Fatehah Mustapa Sunday brightened up the cycling squad when she won a silver medal in the women's keirin event at the Incheon International Velodrome here.Fatehah regarded her victory as unexpected as the list of racers who qualified for the final were top calibre riders.

"Getting a silver is an unexpected bonus. My challengers were all strong.

I expected China to dominate but it was Hong Kong. "Like I said before, the keirin event also depends on strategy. I was afraid of being behind if I followed the top riders as the corners are quite long," she told reporters afterwards.

Also in the tussle for the first to six places with Fatihah were two South Korean racers, Kim Wongyeong and Lee Hyejin, two Chinese, Zhong Tianshi and Lin Junhong, and Lee Wai Sze of Hong Kong.

The gold medal was won by Wai Sze while the bronze medal went to Zhong Tianshi. Fatehah said she hoped her win cured the drought in cycling for Malaysia yesterday and spur the others to vie harder for medals in their respective events.

The 25-year-old from Terengganu will perform in the individual sprint event on Tuesday next.

On her chances in the sprint event, Fatehah said she wanted to qualify at least to the semi-finals to redeem her loss at the ACC championship.

"It will be very good if I can make it to the semi-final. This is because I could not enter the semi-finals during the ACC championship as I was ill. Now I am well," she added. – Bernama
