Adopt BIM technology, CIDB urges industry players

KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) wants industry players to adopt the Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology to improve cost efficiency and reduce wastage. Its chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Dr Judin Abdul Karim, said the construction industry had been slow in adapting the technology due to industry fragmentation. "We need to encourage this technology. We are coming out with 11th Malaysia Plan.

"Therefore, CIDB is inviting all industry players to work together on how to institutionalised BIM technology so that it becomes a norm rather than exception," he said this to reporters after the launch of International BIM Day 2014 conference here Monday.

BIM technology is deployed in the planning, design, construction and facility management of a construction project.

It provides an object-oriented database that is made up of intelligent objects, the three-dimensional representation of integrated information, and a relational database that is interconnected.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

Judin said since early this year, CIDB has invested RM1.5 million for BIM awareness programme.

He said the construction wastages would go as high as 10 per cent, adding that the technology would be able to manage it and in turn could yield savings of up to 30 per cent.

"This will make the industry more professional. BIM technology will be able to identify where the wastages are. If there are still wastages, you can identify who is responsible," he said.

The one-day conference was officiated by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

In her speech, Rosnah said BIM was not something new to the country's construction industry as the government has acknowledged the potential of the technology since 2009.

She said a lot of studies and trials had been conducted to gauge the level of understanding and readiness of the industry.
