KUALA LUMPUR: More cultural competitions should be held to dignify the traditional culture of the Malay archipelago, like the Zapin dance, in the country, said Social and Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Government Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim. The competitions, he said, should be supported by the young generation.

"Indeed, we have to further promote activities in dignifying the culture of the

Malay archipelago, but we need energy to promote it so that the young generation is interested.

"This will give a leap to the Malay archipelago culture, which is further enhancing ties through arts among countries in the Malay archipelago, like Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and South Thailand," he said after attending the friendly match of 'Empayar Akar Kita Zapin Nusantara 2014' here .

Earlier, Rais presented prizes to the winner of the competition, Kumpulan Sanggar Budaya Malaysia.

Four countries took part in the competition, namely Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is organised by Persatuan Tatihseni Malaysia.

In another development, Rais criticised Kuching Member of Parliament Chong Chieng Jen of the DAP for questioning in his Facebook account, the playing of the national anthem in cinemas during the Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

"What is wrong with playing the Negaraku song? Malaysia has been generous to us...we get paid for our jobs, live here...is it wrong if we sing the song in cinemas or at official events?," he asked.

After getting negative reaction from other users of the social website, Chong apologised and deleted the post. – Bernama
