TUMPAT: The war to eliminate poverty carried out by the federal government is impressive as it has brought down the poverty rate among the people from 80 per cent during the early years of the country's independence to merely 1.7 per cent now.Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the country's achievement in eradicating poverty was among the best in the world compared to the other developing countries, including the neighbouring countries.

"In the past, 80 per cent of the national population lived in poverty and now we can take pride that the rate has been brought down to 1.7 per cent, thus the 'jihad' or war by the government to fight poverty had been most successful and impressive," he said when oficiating the the Recognition of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) Partner Award at the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Tumpat.

Also present were the Chairman of the Board of Trustee of AIM, Dr Zubir Harun, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, MARA Chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa and the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the by-election for the Pengkalan Kubor State Assembly seat Mat Razi Mat Ail.

"This shows that what the BN government is doing is the best as what we had done in establishing AIM," he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that as an example, the poor people had been registered through e-Kasih and under this scheme, various forms of aid had been channeled to them.

He said that since 1989, AIM had channeled an allocation of RM11.06 billion to assist 347,000 partners of AIM throughout the country.

"Most of the AIM partners had not only succeeded to get out of the clutches of poverty but had also improved their standard of living," he said.

Muhyiddin also praised the partners of AIM in Kelantan because a total of 47,746 AIM partners who had obtained loans amounting to RM1.56 billion had made loan repayments every month.

"Ninety-eight per cent of the AIM partners were paying back their loans and this proves their commitment and ability to improve their living standard," he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister also called on AIM partners who had registered as voters to help the BN candidate, Mat Razi in defending the BN state seat in the by-election on Thursday.

At the function, Muhyiddin announced an allocation of RM300,000 to realise the formation of the Sahabat AIM Tumpat Entrepreneur Club.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent assemblyman from BN, Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar on Aug 20. The by-election will see a three-cornered fight between BN candidate Mat Razi, PAS candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

In the 13th general election, Noor Zahidi defeated PKR candidate Saharun Ibrahim and Izat Bukhary (Independent) with a majority of 1,736 votes. – Bernama.
