Coupon system: 10,314 parking lots available
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 10,314 parking lots within the central business district (CBD) and outside CBD will be available under the coupon system that will start next month.More than half of the parking lots or 6,951 are designated as the green parking lots, which is for long term parking, while 3,081 are for A (short term use) and 282 for A1 (limited duration parking).

Launching the system on Monday here, Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said the coupon system was to enable a more effective planning of parking, save time to look for parking attendants, avoid non-payment of parking fees and easy to understand parking rate.

According to him, the system was actually not new since it was first introduced in March 2004 but due to several factors such as complicated rates it was not successfully implemented.

However, based on experience of most major cities in the country, the coupon system was much effective than the present ticketing system, he said.

Various counters would be opened to sell the coupons among them at the City Hall counter No. 10, City Hall counter at UTC sixth floor, DBKK Holdings counter at the first floor in KK Plaza and at the 20 payment counters.

Besides that 20 inspectors and 160 parking attendants would also be selling coupons to the public.

Towards this end, Madingkir urged motorists to take advantage of the amnesty month that would end on Oct 3 to pay up their car parking arrears.

After the amnesty period ends, he said a mass issuance of parking outstanding notice would be issued to all defaulters with assistance from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) through the JPJ-link.

Defaulters receiving the outstanding notice would no longer enjoy the 100 per cent exemptions of penalties and instead would be charged 20 per cent more than the penalties, he said.

Therefore, in order to avoid having to pay more than one fold, Madingkir urged motorists to update their parking payments before the amnesty period is over.
