KOTA KINABALU: About RM38.1 million has been allocated as allowance for Islamic teachers and mosque officers in Sabah this year by the Malaysian Islamic Affairs Department (Jakim). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom on Monday said Jakim is particularly concerned for the 4,435 Islamic frontliners in Sabah, although their welfare is the concern of the respective states.

"Jakim is always concerned over the roles played by the local Imams, Islamic teachers and mosque administrators in taking front line role in upholding the teaching of Islam.

"The Federal government has given its utmost trust to their roles which is also ensuring the continuity of the spread of the religion," he said during the Multaqa Imam, Guru Takmir and Mosque Committee Programme, here.

The fund, which is from the Federal government, is to pay RM13.86 million to 1,656 Imams, RM2.34 million to 340 Takmir teachers, RM21.63 million to 2,412 Islamic teachers and RM301,2000 to 27 mosque administrators.

He said Jakim will also continue to organise programmes to ensure the frontliners are updated on the latest information so their effort in the teaching of Islam will be effective based to the true teachings of the religion.

In welcoming the contribution from Jakim, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said many upgrades are needed to the prayer huts, mosques and Islamic classes in the rural areas.

Furthermore, more training is needed in the State to improve on the understanding of Islam across Sabah although Sabah already has the manpower and assets to do the job.

"I also believe the coordination of training and work between State Islamic Affairs Department and the Sabah office of the Islamic Development Department must be continously boosted to maximise their impact on the local communities," he said.

Musa's speech was read by Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Hj Noor.
