Zulmazran fails to emulate silver medal feat in Guangzhou

INCHEON: Malaysia's gold medal hopes evaporated at the bowling alley situated at the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium when national elite kegler Zulmazran Zulkifli managed only fifth spot in the men's individual event.Zulmazran who was tipped to win the gold medal at the Incheon Asian Games had knocked down 1,298 pins to top the first block of keglers in the morning session but saw his high score diminish in the afternoon session.Thailand's unheralded Larp Apharat Yannaphon knocked down 1,319 pins to win the gold while China's Du Jianchao took the silver with 1,300 and Thailand's Kunaksorn Sithiphol pipped Zulmazran by a single pinfall to win the bronze.

Zulmazran, winner of the silver medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010, said the new format adopted in the competition did not include a 'step ladder' competition, thus limiting his activity to only the morning session's score."There are pros and cons in the new format. If I had scored high points in the morning session, it would have added some pressure on the competitors in the afternoon session but I failed to achieve a high score and that proved costly," he said.The 31-year-old who is competing in his fourth consecutive Asian Games said his next focus would be on putting up a better performance in the trios and team events.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Meanwhile, gold medallist for the event, Yannaphon said he was definitely happy with the win because it was his first gold medal in Asian Games.
