Kota Kinabalu: The City Hall on Tuesday began clearing works on vegetation on buildings in various parts of the City centre, following a Daily Express report.Despite repeated calls from the City Hall to building owners to maintain their premises, including removing of wild vegetation and trees on their building, the vegetation continue to exists.

Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said the clearing works will continue until all the unwanted vegetation, that are marring the City's image, are cleared. The operations involved two groups from the Landscape Department started at Segama, Sinsuran, Bandaran Berjaya and Gaya Street.

Meanwhile, the Mayor called upon building owners to exercise their duties and carry out periodical maintenance on their buildings.

He said while it is not under the jurisdictions of the City Hall to clear the vegetation, it has decided to carry out the work, out of fear of the vegetation causing hazards to the public health and safety.

However, he said the City Hall could not carry out this clearing works continuously and remind the building owners to maintain and upkeep their buildings.

Under the City's existing By-Laws, building owners can be charged for Public Nuisance if the vegetation are causing public nuisance and endangering public safety, under the Public Health Ordinance for causing health hazards to the public, and under the Building By Laws, if they neglect and failure to maintain the building.

To-date, Madingkir said they have charged owners who failed to maintain and neglecting their compounds for public nuisance.
