Longest Sabah flag – by Membakut school
MEMBAKUT: SMK St Patrick here made Sabah proud when the school again etched its name in the Malaysia Book of Records after producing the longest Sabah flag measuring 126 metres using recycled canned drinks. The school first entered the book of records for creating the longest 196-metre Jalur Gemilang using 26,236 recycled mineral bottles in 2009.

Its Principal, Elizabeth Mak, said a total of 55,224 canned drinks were used to assemble the 126-metre long and 4.14-metre wide flag that was recognised by MBR as the longest Sabah flag in the nation.

"About 600 people, including 436 students, worked hard to collect the canned drinks since early this year and it took us three weeks to complete the task.

"Each student was required to collect 155 canned drinks and assisted by the parents and teachers.

"Such aspiration would not be realised without the commitment and dedication of the students, parents and teachers as well as contributions and moral support from Membakut Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, government agencies, government-linked companies like Kopeks and Sedco, private companies and individuals," she said.

Mak said this when met after the launching of the longest Sabah flag at the school compound, here, Friday.

Arifin launched the event after he signed a plaque and MBR officer, Suhaila Shamsuddin, announced that the flag was indeed the longest Sabah flag in the country.

Mak said the flag would be displayed for a month at the school's fencing for motorists and the public to see and appreciate the school's effort.

Subsequently, she said all the canned drinks would be weighed and sold to recycling companies and the proceeds will be used to buy furniture and equipment in a new block.

Meanwhile, Arifin, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said the initiative by the school should be emulated by other schools in the State.

"It is not easy to coordinate this effort without the commitment, dedication and active roles by all who did not give up until they succeeded in assembling the canned drinks into the longest Sabah flag.

"I congratulate the school's students, teachers and parents for creating another historical feat in the MBR and I can assure you that Kimanis MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and I will always support any endeavour that will be taken up by the school in coming years," he said.
