RANAU: Nearly 500 people from seven in the district – Kg Tibabar, Kg Monggis, Kg Pinawantai, Kg Pahu, Kg Togop Darat, Kg Togop Laut and Kg Taruntongon – benefited from the 2014 Women Health Camp held at the Kg Pinawantai multi-purpose hall, about three hours' drive from the State capital, Saturday. The event, marked by free health screening, body mass index (BMI) checks and informative talks on nutrition, balanced diet and women's health problems (communicable and non-communicable diseases) was organised by the Sabah Women's Advisory Council (MPWS) Health Committee with the cooperation of the Ranau District Health Office.

MPWS Health Committee Chairperson, Dr Maria Suleiman said the number exceeded the target of 350 people.

"The Ranau District Health Office has done a good job in disseminating information about the health camp. I am glad to note that the menfolk have also been responsive.

"Those found to be suffering from hypertension or high cholesterol, or are potentially diabetic as reflected in their blood glucose level, are being referred to the Health Clinic in Timbua," she said.

Dr Maria, who is also the State Health Department's Principal Assistant Director (Communicable Diseases), thanked the four doctors who sacrificed their weekend for a good cause. They were Medical Officer Dr Wong Yoke Kong from Kundasang Health Clinic, Medical Officer Dr Ian Bede from Timbua Health Clinic, Medical Officer Dr Dyang Ruksuna Md Ruhul from Paginatan Health Clinic and Medical Officer Dr Ten Dick Xiang from Bundu Tuhan Health Clinic.

This was the third such camp to be held since 2008 when it was first organised in Penampang, followed by Beluran early this year.

At the opening ceremony, Dr Maria emphasised the importance of healthcare and the need to achieve an optimum health level, especially among women.

"Women who enjoy good health, physically and mentally, have the capacity to be better mothers, workers, businesswomen or even community leaders for that matter.

"Hence, it is so vital for you to adopt a healthy lifestyle – proper nutrition, healthy eating, regular exercise and maintaining an ideal body weight. This is my message to you today," she told the women.

Saying that health has a higher value than "wang ringgit", the MPWS Health Committee Chairperson lamented that this is not appreciated by some people who tend to neglect their health in life.

"Only when they fall sick or suffer disease do they realise the value of good health. By then, it may be too late," she said.

Mothers were also reminded to have their babies immunised against measles and other diseases.

According to Dr Maria, she encountered one measles case from the district two years ago.

"By right, with the immunisation programme in place, children shouldn't be getting measles."

Principal Assistant Director (HIV/Sexually Transmitted Infection), Dr Khamisah Awang Lokman represented the State Health Department.

A paper on the Practice of Healthy Eating was presented by Noor Hasnani Ismail, a nutritionist with the Maternal and Child Health Clinic in Ranau.

Also present were village community leaders and chairmen of village security and development committees (JKKKs).
