KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Rakyat has been urged to be proactive in enhancing market domination by coming up with new products via diversification, particularly in personal financing.Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said the new products can be in the form of housing loans and for hire purchase. He said this in his speech at the dinner on the occasion of Bank Rakyat's 60th anniversary here last night.

"I understand Bank Rakyat is planning to explore new markets, especially in the area of loans to the private sector.

"This, to me, is a good move. But, what I would like to see is this plan becoming a reality in the short term," he added.

At the same time, Hasan also urged Bank Rakyat to improve its dealings with customers through the use of the latest technology, such as online and mobile banking.

Meanwhile, Bank Rakyat chairman Datuk Mat Noor Nawi said six decades after the financial institution was formed, it was this year placed 273 in the global ranking and sixth in Malaysia, according to "The Banker Top 1,000 World Banks 2014".

He said this success was founded on determination and dedication by all the bank's staff since its formation.

Mat Noor said Bank Rakyat was continuing to expand with a profit of more than RM2 billion last year and assets reaching RM83 billion.

"We have 145 branches, eight million customers as well as 950,000 shareholders," he added. – Bernama
