TUARAN: Trainees from the Kent Teacher's Training College on Monday organised a 'Tamu Sejarah' among school pupils to increase their interest in the subject. Its programme co-ordinator, Dr. Lisa Yip Shukye explained that the programme was also held as part of their effort in supporting the History subject being taught at primary schools starting this year.

According to her, former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Badawi had suggested that History be introduced at primary schools back in year 2008.

"It is compulsory for pupils to learn History and it is one of the core subjects in school," she said, adding that by 2016, the History subject will replace both the Local Studies subject as well as Civics taught at primary schools.

Yip in explaining the theme for the subject said the Year Four pupils will learn about the nation's early history whereas Year Five and Six pupils will study the nation's sovereignty and prosperity respectively.

Meanwhile, Kent Teacher's Training College Deputy Director Romli Darus said the programme will help improve teaching effectiveness on the subject as well as increase creativity and innovation among History teachers.

It is also to change the pupils' perceptions towards the subject, as most pupils usually consider History a boring subject, he said.

"It is also important for teachers to be creative when teaching History because pupils might get bored and lose interest in the subject," he said, stating the importance of technology as one of the teaching aids.

"History learning nowadays is not the same as it used to be in the past. History is not all about memorising the facts but pupils will also learn about the world, our nation and humanity in general."

The programme organised by trainees who majored in History involved 44 Year Four pupils from SK Pekan Tuaran, SRK St John and SJK (C) Chen Sin.

Romli hoped the trainees will hold similar programmes with more exciting activities with involvement from other schools.
