BENTONG: The Transport Ministry is confident that it will be able to achieve the target to reduce the road traffic-related death index to two persons for every 10,000 vehicles by 2020. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, said this was because the index had declined to 2.9 persons for every 10,000 vehicles last year from 4.51 persons for every 10,000 vehicles recorded in 2004.

Liow said the Ministry also hoped to reduce the overall number of deaths due to road accidents by 50 per cent in 2020.

"Based on the trend, the number of deaths is expected to increase by 10,716 cases in 2020, but if we take proactive precautionary measures, including by exposing children to road safety and awareness campaign, we will be able to achieve the target to reduce the death toll."

He said this to reporters after closing the Road Safety Educational Programme for students at Sekolah Menengah Bentong here Tuesday.

He said the target to reduce the death index would also be achieved through continuous awareness campaign, traffic law enforcement and various programmes organised by the Road Safety Department, which had introduced the Road Safety Plan 2014-2020 as part of its commitment to reduce road accidents and deaths.

Liow said statistics also showed that motorcyclists and pillion riders were the biggest contributors to the road traffic-related death index as they made up 4,294 out of 6,000 deaths due to road accidents recorded last year.

"A total of 1,300 of them were below the aged of 20.

This statistics can be avoided if they had gained better understanding and knowledge on road safety.

"Therefore, a review will be carried out on the existing road safety education offered at schools, which will most probably be upgraded according to current requirements," he said.

For the record, the ministry has introduced the road safety education as part of the Bahasa Malaysia's subject in all primary and secondary schools since 2007. – Bernama.
