PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed it briefly detained a politician from Sabah over allegations of corruption in the payment of compensation over State-owned land. Its Investigations Director, Datuk Mohd Jamidan Abdullah, said the politician was arrested on Friday when he showed up at the MACC headquarters to give his statement.

This is contradictory to earlier news reports stating that the politician was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Thursday.

"We are still conducting investigations on this individual under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act in regard to allegations that he was involved in corruption in the payment of compensation over State-owned land.

"Once his statement was recorded, the individual was released," Jamidan said in a statement Tuesday.

Daily Express reported on Tuesday that a Sabah Umno leader was detained in connection with a Criminal Breach of Trust (CBT) amounting to RM300 million.

It said the politician concerned was a former deputy chairman of a state agency and one of the 25 Umno division chiefs in the State.

Meanwhile, in KOTA KINABALU, Pensiangan Umno Division Chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohd Yasin admitted he was called by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last Friday to give statement on a case.

Nonetheless, Ghani, who is now back in Kota Kinabalu, when contacted, declined to comment on the case.

"I received a call from MACC on Wednesday when I was in Kuala Lumpur with my son. I received another call on the same evening asking me if I could attend. On Friday, I voluntarily went to meet them (MACC) in Kota Kinabalu," he said when contacted Tuesday.

Nonetheless, Abdul Ghani denied he was arrested and that he gave his statements voluntarily and cooperated with MACC officers instead.

Elaborating further, he said, the case was still in its initial stage and requested all parties not to make wild speculations so as not to jeopardise investigations.
