New avenue to check outstanding parking tickets

KOTA KINABALU: Car owners will have a new venue to check their outstanding City Hall parking tickets as DBKK Holdings is now building a dedicated website to do so. Executive Director Kenny Chan said the new website and database will be completed in a matter of weeks and will be set up to assist vehicle owners settle their dues immediately. "We are doing the website now so car owners need not go to the City Hall parking office to check on their dues any longer," he told the Daily Express, here.

At present car owners owe City Hall an accumulated RM7 million in parking charges as many had defaulted due to certain weaknesses in the parking ticketing system. City Hall has fixed 20 sen for each ticket owed. On Aug 5, the local government launched a similar database system to check on summons, which it is understood amount to RM53 million accumulated since 2013. Chan said City Hall is now in the midst of issuing parking ticket notices to remind defaulters to pay their amount or face legal action, however he did not mention when.

On another note, Chan said City Hall may beef up efforts to put a stop to pirated buses and taxis taking up a huge number of parking bays near the Kota Kinabalu General Market. He admitted that the illegal activities have been going on for years, adding that parking attendants near the area had worked in fear as there had been instances of such operators acting aggressively against them.

Chan noted the presence of illegal operators pose a huge hindrance for City Hall to collect the parking charges from them. More than 60 per cent of the parking bays supervised by City Hall on both sides of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens from the handicraft centre up to Segama are controlled by these operators.
