RANAU: Over 100 villagers here felt victimised when the main route outside their village was blocked by fencing put up by the SMK Kundasang's administration. Spokesperson of Kg Puru Panjang located approximately one kilometer from Ranau town, Steven Purudin, 48, said villagers have been using the route for years and that the school, SMK Kundasang decided to fence it without warning.

"We are disappointed with the action taken by the school to mark their borders without any consideration to the surrounding community," he said.

According to him, the unpaved route is the main path for villagers who travel by foot or vehicle to go to work, town, school, as well as for local farmers to market their agricultural produce.

With the erection of the chain-link fence blocking their path, no one has been able to make their daily journey back and forth from the village, and this forced villagers to build a small ladder at both side of the fence.

"We decided to build the ladder ourselves so that school children can cross the fence.

"But this also comes with certain risks since the top of the chain-link fence is attached to barbed-wire.

"A couple of days ago there was an elderly villager who was very sick and needed to be brought to the hospital. The villagers had to take turns to carry the man across the fence by going up and down the ladder. This is very sad," he said.

Towards that end, Steven hoped that the school would give a little consideration and perhaps build a gate through the path in question, so that villagers could live as free and unrestricted as before.
