KOTA KINABALU: Netizens aired a myriad knee-jerk reactions to the 20 sen fuel price increases announced by the government on Tuesday night. Many made pledges to make massive cuts on expenses, lamenting their shrinking disposable income due to the hikes.

A teacher by the name of Anton said he may curb spending on new gadgetry, while another said he may pack food from home to avoid eating out for lunch.

A tour guide named Maurice said he may gather a couple of friends to take turns paying for group lunches and only fill up his car in the morning so he won't lose any petrol due to evaporation.

"I may also call friends to say my car has broken down and ask them to give me a lift to work," he said.

On Wednesday, Putrajaya announced that it is cutting its subsidies for the RON95 and diesel by 20 sen per litre, raising petrol prices to RM2.30 and diesel to RM2.20 per litre.

The move was made in an attempt by the government to rationalise policy to ensure the country's financial standings remain strong.

Several other netizens also said they may start to use bicycles to replace their existing mode of transportation to work, adding not only riding on two-wheels would be healthy, they also need not pay parking fees to City Hall.

Aries Henry, 36, said she will cut down on buying new clothes so she can free some additional cash to pay for petrol.

"I may start growing my own vegetables, car pooling with friends to work and canceling my Astro subscription," said the lecturer of a public higher learning institution, here.

"I may go back to basics imposing a partial rollback from my usual luxury expenses," she said in a cryptic note via an online messaging platform.

Others meanwhile claimed the Barisan Nasional government has not kept its 13th General Election promise of not increasing fuel prices if re-elected.
