KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government recognises the importance of housing for all citizens and will continue to emphasise the provision of adequate, quality and affordable homes for the low and middle-income groups."To meet their needs, the Government and the private sector must play their respective roles in fulfilling their social responsibility to the people."

Federal Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said this in conjunction with The Edge Property Excellence Award (Tepea) Retreat 2014 held in Kota Kinabalu, participated by some 30 top property development firms which had achieved five key attributes.

These are product quality in finishing and timeliness, innovation and creativity in their products and marketing, value creation for buyers in terms of capital appreciation, good image including credibility and expertise encompassing excellent management and experience among other criteria.

The Tepea 2014 retreat trip idea was mooted by the Minister during the "The Edge Property Excellence Award" gala dinner held in Kuala Lumpur last year.

"The private sector should continue to concentrate on fulfilling the overall housing demand while ensuring that there is enough affordable homes being built to cater for the majority of the population.

"The public sector has played and will continue to play its role by being an effective facilitator, to enhance the delivery system for the housing sector and provide affordable public housing," said Abdul Rahman.

The Minister stressed that the Federal Government has introduced various policies and programmes to achieve its objective.

"Last year, the Government allocated RM1.9 billion for the construction of 123,000 units of affordable housing. This initiative will be implemented by the two national housing departments under my ministry – PR1MA and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB)."

Abdul Rahman said the Government and the housing developers must collaborate to create a healthy and sustainable housing and property sector.

"Both need to continue to drive sustainable development so as to accrue benefits socially, economically and environmentally," he said.

In Sabah, the property sector generated some RM7.56 billion in gross development value for the State economy in 2013, according to Shareda's research data.
