PUTRAJAYA: Traders who have the 'GST' (Goods and Services Tax) acronym printed on their receipts have been instructed to drop the letter 'G' to avoid confusing customers who may think that the new tax system has begun.Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said traders should just use 'ST' for Services Tax or 'SST' for Sales and Services Tax to collect the 6pc tax.He said it was also wrong for traders to tell customers, in their defence for using the GST acronym, that the GST was 'Government Services Tax' as there was no such tax. ADVERTISEMENT "We have received complaints about this. But we are viewing this as an unintentional error on their part because they are actually qualified to collect the 6% tax either as ST or SST."The issue is that they had used the GST acronym which created an impression that the GST is in place ahead of its April 1 implementation date," he told the media here yesterday.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Ahmad said traders had until Nov 1 to correct the error. Those who failed to do so could face action under Section 183 of the Goods and Services Act 2014 for imposing the GST before the official implementation date, he said. "They can be fined up to RM30,000, jailed two years or both," he added.
