Illegals: Eatery owner fined RM15,000

KOTA KINABALU: A 47-year-old restaurant owner was fined RM15,000 for allowing three illegal immigrants to stay in his premises.Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz ordered Usman Haniffah to pay the fine after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him.

Usman was fined RM5,000 in default three months' jail on each illegal immigrant.

He had allowed two Filipinas and an Indonesian, aged between 19 and 41, to stay in the Farvis Curry House restaurant in Putatan at 11.22am on Sept 5 this year.

The offence, under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM30,000 or a jail term of up to a year, or both, on conviction. The court heard that Usman is the owner of the restaurant.

In the same court, a 43-year-old local Chinese was fined RM5,000 or spend three months in prison for committing a similar offence as Usman.

Voon Lee Fun admitted to hiring a 23-year-old Indonesian woman to work at the Wong and Voon Produce Enterprise in Jalan Ganang, here, on Sept 13 between 11.42am and 12.04pm. They paid their fines.

Prosecuting Officer Hamisah Puteh from the immigration Department prosecuted the case.

In the same court, 13 foreigners were jailed between four and five months for entering the State illegally. The men were given a stroke of the cane.

After serving their jail sentence, they were ordered referred to the immigration Department. – Cynthia D Baga
