EcoWorld aid for poor pupils of Tg Aru school

KOTA KINABALU: Poor pupils at SK Tanjung Aru I on Tuesday became beneficiaries of Eco World Development Group Berhad's (EcoWorld) charitable arm, the Eco World Foundation, under its Student Aid Programme (SAP) that was launched on Sept 24 this year.It was set up on May 7 under the auspices of EcoWorld and will serve as the Group's charitable arm in providing assistance to underprivileged Malaysians.Its Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said it was a momentous occasion for the Group to be able to take its mission of being a caring and responsible organisation, which actively contributes back to society to the next level.ADVERTISEMENT "It is a great achievement in such a short time since EcoWorld first started out in 2012," he said at the distribution of aid to poor pupils at SK Tanjung Aru I.He said the setting up of the Foundation was:l to provide aid whether in the form of financial or otherwise to financially disadvantaged deserving students and to disadvantaged communities for the advancement of education via education assistance programme;l to provide financial assistance in meeting the basic needs of Malaysians who are underprivileged, disabled or poverty stricken; and ADVERTISEMENT l to provide relief or aid to needy individual(s) or to approved non-profit organisation(s) by paying for the cost of medical treatment or donation of equipment required by such individual(s) or non-profit organisation(s) to treat serious diseases.Education, he said, for the needy is a subject very close to his heart and that of the Foundation.

The Students Aid Programme (SAP), he said, is a programme that provides financial assistance to 2,600 students in 134 primary schools and close to 400 in secondary school and 23 in tertiary education annually. "The objective of this noble programme is to keep disadvantaged children of all races in school and we are working on a budget of RM4 million per year to do this," he said. Through this programme, he said, SAP's holistic approach addresses every aspect of a primary student's educational requirements, from equipping them for the new school year, arranging their meals in school and paying their school and tuition fees, among others."More importantly is the attention given to the personal development of every student under the programme," he said.Lee said the Foundation conducts motivational camps every year to prepare Primary Six pupils for the UPSR examination.He said the organisation also recognises the pupils' achievements through its UPSR Excellence Award."Students who achieve good results in the UPSR examinations are also eligible to apply for a continuation in the SAP to secondary education and subsequently to tertiary level as well," he said.To this, he said Eco World Foundation has managed to raise RM6.6 million during its recent inaugural charity dinner on Oct 11.
