KUALA LUMPUR: Hindus in and around the Klang Valley and Selangor gathered at the largest Hindu temple in Malaysia to celebrate Diwali or better known as Deepavali Wednesday.Deepavali, as an auspicious day for the Hindus, means the 'Festival of Light" and is a major festival in the country that is celebrated together with other Malaysians of diverse backgrounds.

At Batu Caves, in the outskirts of the federal capital in Gombak district, thousands of Hindus thronged to the temple for prayers as early as 6 am Wednesday attired in their new and colourful traditional clothes to reflect the joyous ambience.

A local resident M.Dhanendran, 50, said during Deepavali he would normally buy a packet full of bird food pellets to feed mostly pigeons in the vicinity of Batu Caves.

He said, as part of the Hindu belief, feeding animals was an aspiration for a better station in the next life.

"I believed feeding the birds is more worthwhile than if you were to waste your money on gambling, and not only that it is also about doing good deeds which can reward you in the afterlife.

"And if I'm not mistaken feeding animals is also considered an offering for the gods for forgiveness of your sins," he told Bernama.

Meanwhile two friends, M. Raja, 24, and S.Rajanee, 27, were seen smashing a piece of coconut at the temple grounds as an offering for having fulfilled their vows

Rajnee said it was a spiritual way for him to discipline himself to be a better person in his everyday life by fulfilling the vows that he had pledged to do good, especially on this auspicious day.

Another temple worshiper, company manager M.Ghobinath Nair, 36, believed Deepavali meant a celebration of victory over evil after repentance over evil deeds committed.

"Deepavali is a festival of light, where good things defeated the evil part, a festival that we need to celebrate as a part of our victory to overcome the evil within us," he added. -Bernama
