LAHAD DATU: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) is urged to remain committed in helping the community through programmes that could improve their living standards.Lahad Datu Assemblyman, Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal said Mara is synonymous with the organisation of programmes that focus on entrepreneurship, investment and education, in line with government's efforts to help the people improve their quality of life.

"Noble efforts undertaken by Mara should be continued so that our community, especially students, can use the opportunity given to achieve a better life," he said after officiating the 'A Step to Japan' programme here.

In his speech, Yusof said education is important and should be emphasised so that the country can stand head and shoulder with other developed countries.

The programme, he added, is one of the programmes initiated by Yayasan Pelajaran Mara (YPM) in its efforts to produce excellent graduates who would contribute to the country and compete globally.

Therefore, he urged students who have been selected to participate in the programme to increase their efforts and grab the opportunity presented to them to pursue their studies in Japan and become highly knowledgable individuals in the field of science and technology.

Meanwhile, State Mara Director Zulkarnain Zakaria said the programme is one of YPM's efforts to present information about opportunities for further education under the Malaysia Japan Higher Education Programme (MJHEP).

"The programme is designed specifically for Malay and Bumiputera students who achieved excellent results and wish to pursue their studies in the field of mechanical or electronics engineering, fully sponsored by YPM.

"This programme is a cooperation between YPM and UNIKL, carried out at the Mara Institute of Japanese Industrial at Beranang where the students would have to complete three years of study in Malaysia and another two years at any of the 21 selected universities in Japan," he said.

Zulkarnain added that YPM have extended the implementation of MJHEP to ten years, from 2011 to 2022 with more opportunities expected would be provided to the students.

About 400 students from Lahad Datu, Tawau, Semporna, Sandakan and Kinabatangan attended the programme where they received school aids in the form of exam kits.
