11 charged with illegal entry

KOTA KINABALU: An expectant Filipina was among 11 foreigners charged with entering the State illegally.The 21-year-old woman told High Court Deputy Registrar Hafizi Abd Halim who sat as a Sessions Court Judge that she is two months' pregnant.She also claimed that she was not married.

Hafizi fixed Nov 6 for mention of her case when the prosecution applied for another date as they want to send the Filipina to hospital to confirm her pregnancy.Pending the date, the Filipina was ordered remanded further.Meanwhile, the rest were jailed between three and five months after they pleaded guilty to the charge.The men except the youthful offenders were also given two strokes of the cane each.

The Filipinos aged between 15 and 40 were arrested around the city last month and early this month after failing to produce their valid documents.They committed the offence under Section 6(1)© of the Immigration Act 1959/63 provides for a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, on conviction.

Hafizi ordered them to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrest and referred to the Immigration Department after completing their jail sentence.Assistant Superintendent of Police Sabrina Jinius appeared for the prosecution. – Cynthia D Baga
