JikurPAITAN: Grassroots leaders have to assume their roles fully to ensure all government assistance is truly distributed to the target groups. ADVERTISEMENT Beluran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee on Saturday said community leaders can help by listing information on eligible recipients to agencies given the task to channel government aid. Towards this end, he said they also need to have a decent understanding on which agencies are handing out such assistance. ADVERTISEMENT "For example fishermen, community leaders need to refer them to the local fishermen association so they can receive the monthly living allowance provided to them by the Government," he said during a leader and community ceremony in Kg Babago, here.

Kiandee also announced a RM15,000 allocation each for the repairs of the Kg Babago bridge and Kg Singgahmata, and another RM5,000 for the repairs of the prayer hut in Kg Babago. He said under Budget 2015 focus was also given to poor fishermen, saying the Government has decided to increase their living allowance from RM200 to RM300 a month, and the BR1M cash aid from RM650 to RM950. Furthermore, another RM4.5 billion to upgrade existing rural infrastructures in Sabah and Sarawak, he said. Meanwhile, Kiandee also said he had faced challenges in seeking allocations due to stiff competition with other parliamentarians for aid. He said many areas in Beluran are still without electricity and water supplies, adding that as such, leaders need to find the best way to obtain allocation through government agencies. Kiandee said this in a similar event held in Kg Tangtangit, where he also announced an allocation for the construction of a sepak takraw court.
