Ann Jeffrey PUTATAN: Residents of Kg Kapazan here urged the Government to find a solution to the poor drainage system which they claimed is the root cause of the flash floods which hit their village almost every time it rains non-stop.

A village spokesperson, Sylvester Asai, said water from the drainage system would flow to the Lembising River. However, the drainage has not been cleared or widened, resulting in the flash floods.
He said development in the area has resulted in the drainage system being constantly clogged with loose earth that falls into the drain, thus, the need for consistent clearing of the drain.

"We have been faced with flash floods since 2009 and there were suggestions for a new drainage system to be built. However, there are several landowners who do not agree if the drain passes through their land.
"I, therefore, suggest the Government find a solution, perhaps try to acquire these land and provide sufficient compensation to the land owners," he said when met after receiving assistance presented by Putatan Upko Information Chief, Alfred M. Lojitan, who represented Putatan MP, Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh, here, Saturday.
The assistance was presented to a total of 44 heads of families hit by floods in Kg Kapazan.
Meanwhile, Lojitan advised residents who have not received the assistance to go to the Putatan Upko parliamentary office in Duvanson and give their names and identification.
It was learnt that the village has 70 households and 300 residents.
