KINABALU: A total of RM1.41 million worth of contraband cigarettes were confiscated by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) off Sipitang waters, Friday. Sabah and Labuan MMEA Enforcement Chief First Admiral Wan Mohd Affandi Wan Ahmad in a statement, Saturday, said the seizure was conducted by a team on routine patrol when they spotted a boat speeding towards Kuala Sungai Marintaman, in Sipitang, at about 8.15pm.

He said the team followed the boat and came to an illegal jetty where several people were seen transferring boxes from the boat to a seven-tonne lorry.

"As the team approached, those transferring the boxes fled into a mangrove area nearby while the boat sped off into the open sea. Inspections led to the discovery of several boxes of various sizes containing contraband cigarettes believed to be smuggled in to the country," he said.

He said the confiscated goods, including the lorry, have been handed over to the Customs Department for further action.

On another development, Wan Mohd Affandi said MMEA also foiled three attempts of smuggling in contraband liquor and cigarettes off Sabah waters with an estimated value of RM1.8million in May this year.

He urged those with information on smuggling activities to contact the Malaysia Emergency Response Services (MERS) at 999 for immediate action.
