KOTA KINABALU: Buyers of property with freebies given for free by developers or part of their residential property (GST-exempt) sale and purchase agreement furniture fixtures and fittings like refrigerators, air conditioners, oven etc., must be prepared to pay GST on them if the developers are not after April 1 2015 completion date for any housing project.A tax consultant told the audience at a recent Subsidiary Title Property Owners & Purchasers Association, Sabah (STOPS) seminar on GST that was going to be the reality after April 1, 2015 unless the authority decides otherwise by then.

Management fees for strata properties will also be subjected to GST and hence an increase is going to be the new reality, although a lot of smart alecks are still arguing that GST should not be imposed on management fees as the collections were for the benefit of the payers to maintain their property projects, hence not a service for profit, thus should be 'excluded from GST. The Royal Malaysian Customs will have its final say by April 1, 2015.

Some residents of the Angkasa apartments and Likas Court are already up in heat over hefty increases in management service charges while some Alam Mesra residents are taking it in stride over minor hike adjustments for GST.
