TAWAU: Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad said there have been cases of welfare applicants living in poor housing when welfare officers came for a visit but after investigations the applicants were actually found having 90 acres of land planted with oil palm.As such she asked the authorities to ensure the accuracy of the facts regarding the living status of persons applying for help from the Welfare Department.

According to her, it was important to ensure there is no fraud or misuse of the information in the applications submitted and to ensure only those who are truly in need received assistance from the government.

"This is what should be considered carefully by the officers involved before approving or rejecting a person's application," she said.

Jainab was speaking to media representatives after a Ministry assembly with departments and agencies under her ministry at the Tawau Library Auditorium, here on Tuesday.

State Welfare Department Director Etong Terang said from January to September there were a total of 61,709 beneficiaries throughout the State involving aid amounting to RM101.48 million, while in the Tawau Division for the same period, there were about 11, 000 beneficiaries involving a sum of RM4 million.

In another development, Jainab stated that the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism recorded more than 400 cases since the increase in fuel prices recently.

She was asked about the issue of traders who have taken the opportunity to raise prices due to rising fuel prices.
